Miswak: possible benefits and limitations
Miswak is often searched for as a natural toothbrush and traditional oral-care tool. Clinical research has assessed whether it may help control dental plaque and gum inflammation. Some systematic reviews found results comparable to a conventional toothbrush in certain conditions, but studies vary in method, frequency and technique.
What we can say cautiously
Miswak may contribute to mechanical cleaning when used correctly. Results depend on technique and access to all tooth surfaces. An overly forceful technique may irritate tissues; use it gently and follow the directions.
Limits of the evidence
A study result does not guarantee the same effect for every person or product. Available evidence does not justify promises that miswak cures gingivitis, reliably prevents cavities, whitens teeth or treats bad breath. Do not automatically treat it as a replacement for fluoride toothpaste, recommended brushing or dental check-ups.
Natural toothbrushes and whiter teeth
Miswak is not a dental-whitening product and cannot reliably change natural tooth colour. Stains or colour changes have different causes; ask a dentist before trying abrasive methods or whitening products.
